Military Career & Leadership

Command Sergeant Major Dennis Brian Berry served a legendary 27-year career in the United States Army, rising to the highest levels of enlisted leadership within the Special Forces community. Born in Creston, Union County, Iowa, Berry entered active duty in 1987 and quickly distinguished himself through discipline, technical mastery, and an unwavering commitment to the Special Forces ethos.

After completing the Special Forces Qualification Course in 1992, Berry joined the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), where he served on ODAs 332 and 334 as both a Senior Weapons Sergeant and Intelligence Sergeant. His early operational years placed him at the center of small-unit missions requiring precision, adaptability, and independent decision-making across austere environments.

Berry's career spanned multiple major U.S. military campaigns, culminating in his service as the Command Sergeant Major for the International Security Assistance Force-Special Operations Forces (ISAF-SOF) in Afghanistan. In this role, he served as senior enlisted advisor to U.S., British, and Australian general officers, shaping multinational SOF operations during the height of the Global War on Terrorism.

Major Deployments & Campaigns

The Persian Gulf War

During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Berry supported early Special Forces missions focused on reconnaissance, coalition coordination, and battlefield preparation. His work on ODAs 332 and 334 contributed to the initial phases of the conflict, reinforcing the Special Forces mission of small-unit precision and rapid mobility across the Gulf theater.

Global War on Terrorism (Afghanistan)

Berry's service in Afghanistan marked the defining chapter of his Special Forces career. As the Command Sergeant Major for ISAF-SOF, he oversaw enlisted force structure, operational readiness, and multinational SOF integration across forward operating bases and high-threat regions. His leadership directly supported counterinsurgency operations, partnered force development, and strategic-level planning across coalition elements.

During this assignment, Berry served as senior enlisted advisor to Brigadier Generals from the United Kingdom and Australia, reinforcing the international scope of Special Operations missions during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Special Forces Career Progression

After his initial ODA assignments, Berry briefly served at Special Forces Command as a Theater Desk NCO, supporting operational planning and coordination. He later returned to 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) as a Company Operations Sergeant and subsequently as a Team Sergeant, reinforcing his reputation as a technically skilled and tactically proficient senior NCO.

Berry was later assigned to the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (USAJFKSWCS), where he served as a Field Team Sergeant for the Robin Sage exercise—the culminating unconventional warfare event for all Special Forces candidates. He then became First Sergeant of A Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), shaping the next generation of Special Forces soldiers.

After graduating Class 57 of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in 2007, Berry served as Company Sergeant Major of B Company, 1st Battalion, 1st SWTG(A). His career continued with senior leadership roles including Sergeant Major for the Deputy Chief of Staff/G8 at USASOC and finally as the Command Sergeant Major for 4th Battalion, 1st SWTG(A), where he served for the last three years of his career before retiring in 2014.

NCO Leadership & Legacy

As a Command Sergeant Major, Berry embodied the highest traditions of the Non-Commissioned Officer Corps. He served as the principal advisor to commanders on all matters affecting enlisted soldiers—training, discipline, welfare, deployment utilization, and combat effectiveness. His leadership influenced Special Forces soldiers across multiple generations and multiple theaters of war.

Berry's legacy endures through the soldiers he trained, mentored, and led, and through the operational successes of the units he shaped. His career stands as a testament to quiet professionalism, technical mastery, and the enduring values of the U.S. Army Special Forces.
