Kermit Stancil

Kermit Stancil, son of John Archie and Nettie Edwards Stancil, was born June 19, 1910, in Johnston County, North Carolina.

Kermit grew up working on the farm. He graduated from Glendale High School and began farming with his dad. Kermit, the youngest son, was still living at home, when his pa died. Pinettie wanted Kermit to get the home farm. John had already given farms Arthur and Millard.

The John Archer Homestead was always Kermit's home. In 1940, Kermit had the house wired for electricity and made other improvements.

Kermit fell in love with Lucille Jackson. Johnston County Marriage Record state that Kermit was 25 years old when he married 20 year old Lucille Flora Jackson, on December 19, 1935. Minister S. H. Styron of Pine Level married them. Witnesses were Dan U. Oliver and W. E. Crocker.

They joined the Kenly First Baptist Church.

Lucille, daughter of Nathan Leroy Jackson and Martha Lulu Eaton, was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Wayne County. She grew up on a farm and worked with her siblings were Helen, Ray, Annaha and Thomas on the farm.

Kermit moved Lucille into the homeplace. An old saying goes that two women in the same house is one woman too many. This proved to be true. Lucille wanted her own home with only Kermit. Pinettie felt like a visitor in her own home. Millard moved Pinettie and J.D. to his farm in Micro.

Pinettie enjoyed living with Millard in Micro where she could have her chickens and a garden. After a time Millard who was working in Wilson wanted to move closer to work. He sold his home in Micro and they moved to Wilson. She died Nov. 2, 1956.

Kermit had dark hair and blue eyes. He and Lucille farmed tobacco.

Kermit also worked for Watson and Center Brick Tobacco Warehouses in Wilson for 38 years.

They had two children: Kermit Jackson Stancil born September 19, 1940, and Jennifer Lucille Stancil born June 4, 1954.

Kermit Jackson Stancil married Mildred Ann Game on September 28, 1963. Ann grew up in the Princeton area. She worked for a State Senator. They had two sons: Kermit Jackson Stancil Jr. in 1964 and John Stancil in 1973. Kermit Jr. had light hair and blue eyes.

Kermit was popular with his nieces and nephews. He was easygoing and fun.

Kermit died October 26, 1973, and left the farm to his daughter Jenny.

Kermit Stancil Dies; Funeral Slated Sunday

KENLY - Kermit Stancil of Route 2, Kenly died early Friday morning at his home.

Mr. Stancil was a 63-year-old retired tobacconist and farmer. He had been associated with Watson and the Center Brick warehouses in Wilson for 38 years.

He was a member of the original Kenly Free Will Baptist Church and the Kenly Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Stancil was born in Johnston County, a son of the late John Archie and Bettie Edwards Stancil.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the Kenly Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. James Joyner will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kenly Cemetery with full Masonic rites.

Mr. Stancil is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucille Jackson Stancil; one son, Kermit J. Stancil of Princeton; one daughter, Miss Jenny Stancil, a student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill; one brother, J. Millard Stancil of Wilson; three sisters, Miss Alice Stancil of Wilson and Mrs. Ralph Cox and Mrs. Henry Sawyer of Durham; and one grandchild.

Jennifer married Steven Clark Williams on June 8, 1980. They had two children: Matthew Clark Williams born in 1984 and Patricia Kay born in 1982. Jennifer became a pharmacist.

Lucille died at her Kenly home in January 1984.
